Trust in People
December 19th, 2005Giving people the benefit of the doubt……easy enough thing to do, right? I have been trying for the past couple of months to truly believe that there is a goodness in each and everyone of us. I admit, this was very naive of me to think. What made me think that “in general” people are “good”? From this point forward, until further evidence proves me wrong, I will no longer be giving people the benefit of the doubt. All humans have ulterior motives, they all have their eyes on whatever it is “their” prize is. For those without a dictionary this evening, an ulterior motive is to lie beyond what is evident, especially concealing things intentionally so as to deceive. The last time I checked, being deceptive is not an optimal trait to have. The ability to cleverly omit the facts is not an optimal trait to have.
Why can’t people just be kind? Stop manipulating, stop teasing, stop being rude, stop being demeaning to others, stop deceiving, stop omitting the truth, just be kind and everyone would be happier. If not everyone, at least me.
• If you want to talk to someone, just talk to them.
• If you want to be in a relationship with someone, tell them so.
• If you like someone, let them know.
• If you lied to someone, apologize and hope they will forgive you.
• If you are lonely, say so.
This is life. This is not a game where someone wins. There is no “grand prize”. This is it folks. Live everyday with meaning and without regrets. What happens the day you are not around? Then what? Won’t you feel like an ass for being a deceptive jerk your whole life?
