Bargain Shopper

I have a confession- I am not a bargain shopper. I mean, sure, if I am going to buy something expensive, I shop around. But grocery shopping? I am a one-store kind of gal. I don’t look at weekly ads. I don’t clip coupons (I do for Costco, but I don’t know if I would count that). I don’t shop in discount grocery stores, though I do shop at Costco… I am so contrary. And I don’t compromise for something less expensive if there is a brand I know I like available. With that being said, when a product I am loyal to is on sale, I go a little overboard.

Take for example, this stock:

It was on sale for $1.99. That is a pretty good deal. And we use stock almost everyday in the kitchen. (Is this normal? How often do you use it?) But did you see that sticker on the front?!? $3.00 off if you buy 3. That means each box of stock would only cost me $0.99!

I was shopping with my thrifty sister, who actually uses coupons to her advantage, and she pointed out that you needed to also spend a minimum of $10. So I resigned myself to buying some weird number of boxes so that I can use a few coupons, but not end up spending more than $20 on stock. As we were checking out, the woman kept taking the coupons off. I even tried pointing out the $10 minimum (I’m honest- sue me). So even though I wasn’t meeting the minimum purchase, she just kept taking $3 off every time that third box of stock passed over the scanner. I went back and bought more. I couldn’t help myself.

p.s. Thanks to my sister, another grocery store accepted an expired coupon that she had buried in the bottom of her purse for Almond Milk. Lisa saved me $13 that weekend on my groceries (though I probably would have bargained shopped on the stock anyway).

Music making this morning

I tend to listen to NPR in the morning. It is the only time I really get exposed to what is going on in the world. Though lately, I have been falling asleep on my drive. So I decided to try something different- I put on music instead.

Today’s album that got me through my morning commute:

Thanks G Love and Special Sauce.

Duck, Duck… Turkey?

I drive a little more than 3 hours just about everyday. One of the consequences of this, is that it dramatically increases the odds of my car interacting with wildlife. Can you see where this is going?

Yesterday, on my way home… I was minding my own business, driving responsibly, well within the speed limit, both hands on the wheel, both eyes on the road… and all of a sudden – SWOOSH!

THIS GIANT TURKEY FLEW UP NEXT TO MY CAR! I almost hit it. It was soooooo close. And can you guess what my reaction was?

No. I didn’t brake.

No. I didn’t speed up.

No. I didn’t calmly continue on my journey.

My first, immediate response – was to duck.

Yes.

In my car.

Surrounded by plush interior of my CRV, my fight or flight reaction to this bird was to duck.

Lesson: Don’t expect me to behave rationally if I am in an emergency situation. I will probably just roll into the fetal position.

Tangled No More

I know this is following a hair post and the title is going to lead people to believe that all I care about is my curls. But no. This post isn’t about hair. It is about my headphones – and what a tangled mess they can be. In fact, I just had Apple replace my headphones because I lost a crucial piece to them when I was untangling them on the street.

My old pair – I had them wrapped around an embroidery floss bobbin. And that worked for about a year until the cord was weakened by the wrapping process. I had looked online for other viable ways to store my cords. Then one day I was looking at the tiniest of scraps of my Mendocino fabric that I am using to make a quilt (yes, I keep every little scrap of this stuff, you never know what you are going to come up with) – and I decided to make myself a little pouch.

Sure it is a little wonky, perhaps one might say “not quite square”, but truly I think it will do the job and I will get to look at one of my most treasured scraps all of the time.

Please note that there is not a close up of the button hole. That is because this is my first project with a button hole and well… it is obvious that it is my first one. But look at that eyelet at the bottom! That turned out pretty good.

And now I can carry my earbuds with me where ever I go without them turning into a tangled mess! Yay!

Short Hair…

can be kind of fun.

Or funny, depending on how you look at it.

I know this picture is blurry – but I like to think that is as stable as I can be first thing in the morning.

I like to call this the crazy q. It looks like I might have a question. I do. How is it that my hair is standing on end?

My first notepad

I don’t know where I first saw this planner.… but as soon as I saw it, I realized that I had been wanting to make something like it for a very long time now. In fact, I have several iterations of something similar in my design folders but hadn’t gotten it squared away.

So I bought it.

And I have already put three of the .pdfs to work for me. I started using the Resolution Board and Tracker, the Weekly Blog Planner, and the Weekly Meal Planner.

Since the meal planner is hopefully going to be a well-used piece of planning goodness, I decided to make a pad of them for the kitchen. I had the padding compound from a few years ago when my sister and I decided separately to make the same projects for our family. So my padding compound sat in my closet for two or three years… but I finally got it out.

Not a masterpiece, by any means. But for the first time using the padding compound, I did a pretty good job. Now I will just have to make about 1,000,000 more notepads to perfect my technique. Look out Etsy store…
